.....A few weeks before my journey was about to begin, I went to see the Director of the
Lincoln Recovery Center and asked if he had any recommendations for my travels, since
I knew he had spent many years in Asia. He had a critical expression on his face but
suddenly gave in, and gave me contact details of friends of his in India and Nepal. I was
very excited. He looked more concerned than satisfied.
In September 2010, my journey finally began from New York to India, through Malaysia,
Singapore and Nepal. In Nepal I met Rajendra, the director of Freedom House, a
rehabilitation center for men. Freedom House is an in-patient facility for men, located in
Katmandu, with beautiful surroundings. The clients stay at the facility as long as they
can afford, but usually up to 3 months at a time. It was a big beautiful house with many
facilities for the clients such as sport activities, television and a big garden to use as they
pleased. Rajendra and I talked all day and he told me about the facility and the story
behind it. They were currently struggling to keep up the good work without much
financial support. In Freedom House they had to re-use the NADA-Acupucture needles,
so each client had their own set through the whole stay. Rajendra told me that he wished
he could have a bigger supply of needles and accessories but explained that he was
grateful for being able to provide this service to his clients even though the supply was
limited.
Rajendra explained that the prices offered by freedom house? were expensive compared
to Nepal´s general income per housing and Rajendra often had to reduce the price to
give a family the opportunity to let their son or husband recover in the facility. In Nepal
and India they have separate rehabilitation centers for male and females. Rajendra told
me it was because it was easier to have it that way. Especially since many of the men at
Freedom House were very young. I agree that separating the sexes can be effective, but I
also think it depends on where we are in the world and who we are dealing with.
Opening centers to both male and female patients can be another challenge for the
clients, but also a learning process of their own awareness and emotions.
I truly enjoyed the day in Freedom House? and hope they will keep up their effective
and successful work....
